Post-Oscars 2007

Yes, the rumors are true...I did once again retain my title as the Oscar's Pick'em master. I got 13 out of the 24 categories correct this year In addition to that I also predicted the Oscars would end at 12:13 am and they actually ended at 12:18am. Impressed? Yeah...I didn't think so. Even getting 13 correct didn't win me the grand prize outright. In the end I was tied with three other people at John's party. So the tie was settled out in a virtual slug-fest over Wii Boxing. After knocking out Lisa in the first round (sorry Lisa but if you never protect you mid-section I will drop you like a fly) it was between Duane and myself in the final bout. Duane held his own until the third and final round where I reigned supreme. I am one $25 Target gift card richer because of it.

My favorite part of the Oscars had to be when Will Ferrell and Jack Black sang in a little musical. Please to enjoy Oscar Comedy Musical...

Oscar Picks 2007

Way back in the day I was good at picking the winners. Especially when Yahoo! Games offered an Oscars Pick'em game. Way back in my college days you could pick the winners in each category, form groups to have people play against one another, and even predict how long the event would last. Well I am sure for some reason they got rid of it (copyright issues, the Academy Awards wanted to have their own version, etc.) and now I haven't picked winners for several years now. So I might be a little rusty. After the bump are all my picks for each category and even a total runtime for the award so. I will even go into a little detail about why I picked each for a little insight into how I do things.

Best Picture: Babel
Took home the Golden Globe and it's global message will win it for the Academy. The Departed is just a little too violent. I would like to see Departed or Little Miss Sunshine get it but I just don't think it is going to happen for either of them.

Best Director: Martin Scorsese
I think he will get his Oscar this year despite the film not getting one. I think the Academy will finally say sorry to him all these years for snubbing him from an Oscar for his body of work. It will be more of a lifetime achievement award than anything. And the fact that Paul Greengrass is nominated shows they really want to give it to Scorsese.

Best Leading Actor: Forest Whitaker
This is tough category to pick. Whitaker won both the Golden Globe and SAG award for this role and I think he has a good chance of taking the Oscar as well. Peter O'Toole does pose a serious threat to this happening. Add on to that usually the Academy does tend to be a little racist/prejudice and the thought of having both Leading and Supporting Actor awards one by Black men could be too much for some of the older Academy members. Still I think Whitaker deserves the award and will win it. I mean just look at Ghost Dog for a performance that should have been nominated in the past.

Best Supporting Actor: Eddie Murphy
Won both the Golden Globe and SAG award. Some think that Jackie Earle Haley has a shot being that he has made a tremendous comeback. The former Bad News Bear has had some rough times in recent years and it would be good for him to win. But I think Norbit is gonna run away with the Oscar.

Best Leading Actress: Helen Mirren
She played the Queen of England. She won both the Golden Globe and SAG Awards. And, oh yeah...She was the fucking Queen of England!

Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Hudson
"And I am telling you, I'm not going..."

Best Adapted Screenplay: The Departed
Just because it will get snubbed for Best Picture.

Best Original Screenplay: Little Miss Sunshine
Just because it will be snubbed for Best Picture.

Best Animated Film: Cars
Happy Feet? Monster House? Not going to happen when you have Paul Newman and Larry the Cable Guy as voice talent.

Best Art Direction: Dreamgirls
Although Pan's Labyrinth is a strong contender for this category I think they will give Dreamgirls another award.

Best Cinematography: Children of Men
Cinematography is always a tough category to read. Pan's Labyrinth once again is a strong leader but I think some a little less fantasy will win.

Best Costume Design: The Queen
Period film usually win this category. Although The Devil Wears Prada has a good shot at taking that away.

Best Documentary: An Inconvenient Truth
The world is going to explode! The Liberal Left in Hollywood love that. That film I mean...not that Earth will explode. I mean that would be very inconvenient.

Best Documentary Short: Two Hands
About a piano player that loses his ability to play the piano and then regains that ability.

Best Film Editing: The Departed
Because it will get snubbed for Best Picture.

Best Foreign Language Film: Pan's Labyrinth
I think this will be the highest honor that Pan's Labyrinth will get. It is a very creepy and haunting fantasy movie which doesn't appeal to many but it's war backdrop will help out. If Letter From Iwo Jima was nominated in this category then it would have won and not Pan's Labyrinth.

Best Makeup: Pan's Labyrinth
Did you see the dude with eyes in his hands. I mean that is some crazy shit.

Best Original Score: Babel
Just a guess really.

Best Original Song: "Listen" from Dreamgirls
Two other Dreamgirls songs, a Randy Newman song, and a song from a movie where the Earth is going to explode. Randy Newman is always usually a safe bet but there is so much buzz around Dreamgirls at least one of the songs will win. Picking the winner that was a tough one.

Best Animated Short: Lifted
Complete guess on this one.

Best Live Action Short: West Bank Story
West Side Story meets the West Bank of Israel. Genius!

Best Sound Editing: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Canons go boom!

Best Sound Mixing: Dreamgirls
Buzz, buzz, buzz. It's Dreamgirls.

Best Visual Effects: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Did you see the former Monkee in the film? I bet you couldn't even recognize him. Crazy.

Total Runtime: 3 hours 43 minutes

Two things I realized this week.

The first of which hit me pretty hard Monday morning. I did something at work and a sharp pain hit my back just below my right shoulder blade that was unbearable. It was the kind of back pain that causes you to become short of breath and immobile. So I sat still for a second and tried to catch my breath (which a lifetime of asthma has trained me for) and was able to move after a short while. Since it hit me hard I wasn't sure what it could be.

Well the pain continued through Tuesday and into Wednesday. Now of course I am not one to take pain killers so I waited until Tuesday night before the self medication program began. Wednesday was the worst day when I tried to stretch before getting into the shower and ended up curled up in the fetal position on the bathroom floor in tremendous pain. That was when I figured out that it had to be a pinched nerve along my spinal column. Disc golf related I am sure of it.

So a few of might have seen my grimace once or twice at the blogger meetup. Or even walking like a hunchback. This is meant to be a "pity me" post in way. I think a weekend of rest will do me some good.

The second thing I realized this week was the maybe why I don't post much anymore. First reason being that I don't make much attempt to be on the interweb as much. Working more hours, playing the Wii, projects around the house, and only one share computer monitor are a few of the reasons this has occurred. The biggest reasons being that I haven't been making time for blogging and haven't had anything to blog about.

Now I have good ideas from time to time but I never get a chance to write them down so I forget them. So when I do have time to get on the computer I got nothing. Then later I remember the idea and then later it goes bye-bye. I figure I need to start writing this stuff down and maybe I will follow through with these thoughts. Or not. Who really knows. I will make an attempt though.

Test Post From Performancing Plug-in

So I added the Performancing.com Plug-in for Firefox.  Lets see if I like it and will it actually increase the my blogging rate.

Winter is over!

...well so says the Groundhog. General Beauregard Lee saw no shadow so that means an early spring. Which of course means more time outside. This winter has just been really crappy. When it is winter time I want it to be winter the whole time. Not this whole freezing one week and then 70 degree weather the next. Maybe I just need to move north to a place where snow falls in the winter and it is nice weather in summer. Nah, I like Georgia too much to leave.
